CLASS NEWS FOR

KOLORFUL KINDERGARTNERS

AND

FIRST GRADE SPOTTERS

September 7, 2010

Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

Welcome to the first day of school!  I hope that your child will experience lots of learning and fun this school year under the guidance and protection of Jesus!

Weekly Reminders/Announcements

  • Whole school dismissal will take place today at 11:15am.  All kindergarten parents should park in the parking lot and wait in our hallway to pick up your child.  First grade parents, you are also welcome to come in for pick-up.  Any first graders not picked up in the room will go to carline with Mrs. Schott.
  • Regular dismissal times/procedures will be in effect beginning on Wednesday.
  • Please join us for Mini-School Night on Thursday, September 9.  The evening begins at 6:30pm with a short meeting of all the parents, followed by individual meetings in the classrooms.  I will first speak to the kindergarten parents (approximately 20 minutes) and then to the first grade parents (approximately 7:00-7:10pm).
  • Book orders will be distributed this week.  Book orders are due on or before Friday, September 17.  Payment should be with exact change only, or a check made payable to Scholastic.
  • Absences:  Please call the school office if your child is ill, or, if it is a planned absence, let Mrs. Schott or myself know.  These are considered “excused” absences.  Otherwise, it is considered an “unexcused” absence (and marked accordingly on the report card) if we don’t hear from you.
  • Look for the ELS News (general note for the entire school) to be on your child’s clipboard or in their pocket folder either on Thursday or Friday of each week.
  • We’ll celebrate Collin’s birthday on Wednesday.  Happy Birthday, Collin!

Kindergarten

  • Memory Work:  “All things were created by God.”  (Colossians 1:16)  The Bible reference doesn’t have to be memorized.  The children will recite the passage on Fridays.  I always explain the meaning of the verse and review it daily as part of Circle Time.
  • During Jesus Time we’ll be talking about The Creation Story.  The children will hear that God is wise and loving, as shown in His goodness and care in creating the world.
  • Much of the time in the first weeks of kindergarten is spent on establishing routines and procedures.  I spend a great deal of time on this so that a pattern for effective learning can take place throughout the year.
  • The first time through the alphabet will be for sight recognition of letters.  I’ll also teach the sign language for each letter.  You may also hear about our search this week for “Chester.”  He’ll be bringing alphabet letters.  I will ask you to make an alphabet book with your child using the letters.  More information about that will be shared next week.
  • I’ll be reading some beginning of the year books such as Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten, The Kissing Hand, plus others.
  • We’ll also begin simple Workstations.  These will include journal writing, sorting and classifying and name puzzles.

First Grade

  • We will be talking about Creation during Jesus Time.  An important point to remember is that God showed His love for us by creating this beautiful world and by sending Jesus to be our Savior.
  • For this week only, I am sending the Memory Work home today.  The verse is:  “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.”  (Genesis 1:31)  The Bible reference should also be memorized.  Your child should be prepared to say memory work on Fridays.  Look for next week’s memory work in your child homework folder on Thursday.
  • We will be spending some time on establishing classroom routines in first grade.  Most of the phonics, math and reading material will be review.  Homework folders go home every night in their backpacks and are to be brought back the very next school day.  All corrected papers are sent home on Mondays in a special plastic envelope.  I will be explaining homework and classroom procedures in greater detail  on Thursday at Mini-School Night.

Enjoy your week!
